Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze on Friday, May 29, laid his mother, Mrs. Serah Chinyere Chukwueze, to rest in Umuahia, Abia State, bringing together football figures, dignitaries, and mourners from across the South-East for an emotional farewell.

The Passing
The footballer lost his mother, Sarah Chukwueze, in January 2026 after a period of illness. She passed away on January 29, and at the time, Chukwueze was with his club in England — where he spent last season on loan at Fulham — and was unable to return to Nigeria for the immediate funeral rites. Mrs. Chukwueze's death drew widespread sympathy from across Nigeria's football community, with tributes pouring in from fans, football administrators, political leaders, and well-wishers.

The Deceased
The late matriarch was known formally as Prophetess (Dr.) Mrs. Serah Chinyere Chukwueze (née Onyegbule), who died at the age of 59. She was known to be a major source of support in her son's life, and Chukwueze often shared photos of her on his social media accounts. The Nigeria Football Federation had earlier described her as a strong pillar in the life and career of the Super Eagles winger, acknowledging the significant role she played in supporting his rise to professional football.

The Ceremony
In line with South-East burial traditions, which often require extensive planning for the funeral of a family matriarch, the ceremony was held after the end of the football season to allow for a fitting send-off. A wake-keep was held the night before in Umuahia, where relatives and sympathisers gathered to honour the deceased and pay their final respects.

The day's activities included a procession through her husband's hometown of Oko-Item in Bende LGA, a church service tribute at Elohim Divine Miracle Assembly in Umuahia, and visits to her maternal home at Amaeke Ibeku, before the funeral service was held at Isieke Primary/Secondary School Field in Umuahia. The interment followed at her son's residence in Isieke Ibeku.

An Outpouring of Support
The event was well-attended, drawing government dignitaries, social media personalities, and prominent entrepreneurs from the South-East. Also present was the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, alongside other dignitaries from the football community. Super Eagles players including Kelechi Iheanacho and Awaziem were in Abia State to offer emotional support to Chukwueze.

An Emotional Goodbye
Samuel Chukwueze, dressed in white native attire, was in tears just before his mother was laid to rest. Videos from the event circulated widely on social media, showing the moment Chukwueze broke down in tears — a deeply emotional scene for the footballer who had also faced heavy criticism after missing a penalty during Nigeria's AFCON 2025 semi-final clash against Morocco. One heartfelt comment that circulated online captured the grief perfectly: "Bro you won't understand what it's like to work so hard after your parents struggled for you and then at the point when there's already breakthrough, they die."

The ceremony was a deeply moving tribute to a woman who dedicated her life to her faith, her family, and her community — and whose influence on one of Nigeria's finest footballers can never be overstated. May her soul rest in peace.
